Phoenix Object Basic is available for both the Windows and the Linux platform. Both platforms support the exact same basic language and use the same developer user interface. The range of predefined controls in the Windows package is somewhat larger than in the Linux package.

The Windows product is currently at Version 1.4 and is known as " Envelop" The Linux product is currently at Version 1.5 Beta 6. Both can be downloaded both using the HTTP (web browser) protocol and using the FTP (file transfer) protocol. Instructions for downloading and installing are below.

Phoenix 1.4 for Windows (a.k.a. "Envelop")

To install Envelop on a Win32 machine, download the phx14.exe file (an auto unzip executable) and unzip it into a temporary directory. Run the setup.exe program that you will find in the temporary directory and the install procedure will start. You can delete the temporary directory after the install has completed.

Phoenix 1.5 for Linux Beta 6

Phoenix is distributed as an RPM package. There are two packages, one with the executable binaries and one with the documentation. To install Phoenix on your system, download both packages on your computer. Then install the packages using the 'rpm' command (being logged in as 'root'):

# rpm -U phoenix-1.5-6.i386.rpm
# rpm -U phoenix-doc-1.5-6.i386.rpm

To run Phoenix once it is installed, just type "phoenix" at the command line and switch to the X desktop screen (usually virtual screen 7).
